Tuesday, April 3rd -- "West by North / South"
Another extraordinary day at NPE2012!
Not only because of its geographical location in the West complex, but also because EDM technology is important to moldmakers, we stopped to visit Makino (booth #783), and picked up a press kit that included Vertical and Horizontal machining center information, as well as Ram and Wire EDM material.
The good people at Incoe Corporation (booth #4445) took a while to acknowledge us, not out of any degree of inhospitality, but because of a mobbed booth and the need to prioritize contacts with prospects eager to learn about Incoe's new and core product line. Incoe has been a long and faithful advertiser in THE MOLDMAKER JOURNAL. We extended our gratitude and picked up a valued press kit, hoping to include proper coverage in our May 2012 edition.
At approximately 11:30 AM, we met with Christy Domanoski of Scheibel- Halaska, the folks who handle industrial public relations for DME and Milacron (booth #2803). Christy arranged an introduction to DME Sales Manager Dave Lange who spent a generous chunk of time with us conducting a tour of DME's new product introductions. We handled and operated a Dove Tail Collapsible Core, experiencing first-hand its smooth and precise mechanism, along with a number of additional, mold components. Dave explained in some detail the company's Edge PT Pre-Pocketed Mold Bases. Great tour, very information and instructive for those of us who still have a great deal to learn about moldmaking and the products that serve and facilitate the work of the average mold builder.
Progressive Components (booth #4681) was well populated with potential and existing customers. The company's booth encompasses Rohr Tool and others of Progressive's constituents, products and services, Tooling Docs incuded. We missed seeing Progressive's exceptional Ms. Cyndi Kushtush, who very effectively oversees communications, but gathered all of the news and information the company is presenting or introducing at NPE.
At booth #4263 in the West Hall, NyproMold, Inc. showed off its new CT-scanning, a technology that produced fast, precise 3D representation of parts, allowing easy metrology evaluations. Interesting and nicely explained by the good people at Nypro. Good press information kit, complete with excellent images.
David Rose of Beaumont Technologies, Inc. (booth #5445) provided ample information on his company's new and upgraded technology, including the new Therma-flo Moldometer. Dave defines the technology as a "real world" testing method for gauging mold pressure vs. velocity sorted by cavity thickness, and pressure vs. velocity sorted by runner diameter. Beaumont offers an excellent plastics professional training series, and is a recognized industry leader in the development and appication of melt management systems.
The International Plastics Design Competition is based and nicely showcased in the South / North Hall (#21062). Competing products are effectively displayed and described. We managed to snap a number of digital photos, realizing full well that ours will not compare that favorably to the SPI staff's excellent product photos that IPDC hosts display via computer screen. Another outstanding competition, remarkably creative designs, fascinating to see, touch and read about via the descriptive cards placed beside each entry.
Big, giant thanks again to SPI, the Equipment Council and its Moldmakers Group, and Tania Farries, for helping make it possible for us to attend. There's nothing (with apologies to the Internet) that can compare to experiencing NPE on an "up close and personal" basis. We wish NPE, its superb staff and all of its great exhibitors huge success throughout the run of the 2012 Edition.

Monday, April 2nd at NPE!
At the enormous and spectacular 2012 Edition of NPE -- held for the first time in its history at the remarkably large and sprawling Orange County Convention Center -- the imperative for most attendees has to be: "Pace Yourself!" Plan your day and routing carefully using the Official Maps and Guides, and of course the Show Directory; copies of the guide and directory publications are available and plentiful at and near Registration. Thanks to the "road map," hospitality and welcoming guidance generously furnished by SPI's Tania Farries, the managing editorial staff of THE MOLDMAKER JOURNAL struck out on our Day One adventures and enjoyed a foray into the Moldmaking Showcase!
Like a cool breeze wafting though the airways and aisles of the aforementioned Showcase / Pavilion, optimism is pervasive, much to the collective satisfaction of participating moldmakers and the good people at SPI who produce the massive expo. Carson Tool & Mold's (Booth #45005) booth staffer reports that his company's business is undergoing an upsurge with a number of customers -- once buying their molds from overseas sources -- returning to Carson, while freely acknowledging the quality and overall economies of U.S. - made molds. Larry Hauck, general manager of PM Mold Company, Inc. (Booth #43009), echoed that sense of optimism as business and opportunities generally improve. Larry mentioned a theme that many if not most moldmaking businesses are keen to promote -- the need to channel young people into the profession and promote the art of moldmaking for the significant professional satisfaction it engenders, its challenging skill base and its highly attractive and rewarding earning power, one that compares very favorably with professions requiring university degrees.
Finally, we commend the gracious and professional presence of Tania while we paraded the corridors of the Moldmaking Showcase. Tania didn't fail to elicit exhibitor comments and suggestions while thanking each of them for attending. We would also like to note -- and with the satisfaction that comes from apparently serving a genuine need -- that many of the attending moldmakers reported their enjoyment of continuing to receive, read and derive benefit from articles that appear in the pages of THE MOLDMAKER JOURNAL. We greatly appreciate the opportunity to attend, and extend our sincere thanks to the outstanding staff of SPI and NPE.
As for Day Two -- Tuesday, April 3rd -- we plan to enjoy the creative wonders of the International Plastics Design Competition (South / North Hall, Booth #21062).
